Whereas the meandering path of the band has encompassed diverse styles during the last few decades, ranging from raw black/thrash metal and epic heavy metal to progressive rock and avant-garde art music, Zemial's early beginnings were about black metal exclusively - and indeed, the 1992's Sleeping Under Tartarus is the prime testimony of that.
